horizontal-ruleI was attracted to working with children and families from the beginning of my adult work life. Immediately after completing my undergraduate studies I became a Residential Counselor and House Parent at the Presbyterian Home for Children in Talladega, Alabama, a residential home for children with families under stress or with educational or behavioral needs.  I later became a licensed mental health counselor and worked with individuals and families. My interests then took me to my doctoral studies, where I conducted research on children’s play behavior and parental bonding.

Since becoming a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist I have focused my practice on pediatric, adolescent, and young adult therapy and working with families facing all manner of challenges–military deployments, blending of step-families, coping with divorce, grief/loss, and so on. I have particular interest in the social, emotional, and academic readiness of young children in child-care, preschool, and elementary school. I am presently an Officer and Board Member for the Florida Association for Infant Mental Health, and for the better part of two decades have consulted as a child development specialist to school districts and State Departments of Education throughout the southeastern United States.

I take great personal satisfaction in helping families discover and learn to exercise their strengths and to cope with their challenges. My commitment to families led me to become an Approved Supervisor, helping prepare the next generation of Marriage and Family Therapists.  I am proud of how Family & Child Development has become one of Ft. Walton’s premier centers for effective, compassionate, and highly professional counseling care.  I look forward to the opportunity to assist your family should the need arise.
